Proverbs To Live By

The purpose of these proverbs is to teach people.

These proverbs will make the simple-minded clever.

Become even wiser.

Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.

If sinners entice you, turn your back on them.

They will booby-trap their own lives! Such is the fate of all who are greedy for gain. It ends up robbing them of life.

I’ll pour out the spirit of wisdom upon you and make you wise.

All who listen to me will live in peace and safety, unafraid of harm.

Search for my instructions as you would for lost money or hidden treasure.

The Lord grants wisdom.

Wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy.

Fear the Lord and turn your back on evil. Then you will gain renewed health and vitality.

Happy!

Wisdom will guide you down delightful paths.

By wisdom the Lord founded the earth.

They will fill you with life and bring you honor and respect.

The Lord is your security.

Don’t envy violent people.

Violent people are an abomination to the Lord.

God shows favor to the humble.

Don’t turn away from my teaching.

Follow my instructions and you will live.

Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do.

Wisdom will guide you to a fulfilled life.

Let my words penetrate deep within your heart, for they bring life and radiant health.

Above all else, guard your heart, for it affects everything you do.

The lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil.

Her house is the road to hell. Her bedroom is the den of death.

Wisdom is far more valuable than rubies. Nothing you desire can be compared with it.

I hate pride, arrogance, corruption, and perverted speech.

I love all who love me. Those who search for me will surely find me.

Those who love me inherit wealth, for I fill their treasuries.

I was the architect at his side. I was his constant delight, rejoicing always in his presence.

The wise, when rebuked, will love you all the more.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Wisdom will multiply your days and add years to your life.

A wise child brings joy to a father.

Right living can save your life.

The words of the godly lead to life.

Don’t talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off he flow.

The blessing of the Lord makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

The hopes of the godly result in happiness.

The godly speak words that are helpful.

God rescues the godly from danger.

Evil words destroy one’s friends.

Your own soul is nourished when you are kind.

A woman who is beautiful but lacks discretion is like a gold ring in a pig’s snout.

Give freely and become wealthier.

Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.

The fool will be a servant to the wise.

He that winneth souls is wise.

A shameful wife saps his strength.

The godly are concerned for the welfare of their animals.

Only fools idle away their time.

People can get many good things by the words they say.

The wise listen to others.

A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted.

The words of the wise bring healing.

Truth stands the test of time.

Joy fills the hearts that are planning peace.

The Lord hates those who don’t keep their word, but he delights in those who do.

Wise people don’t make a show of their knowledge.

An encouraging word cheers a person up.

The diligent make use of everything they find.

Good people enjoy the positive results of their words.

A quick retort can ruin everything.

Those who work hard will prosper and be satisfied.

The life of the godly is full of light and joy.

Those who take advice are wise.

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true, there is life and joy.

It is pleasant to see dreams come true.

If you accept criticism you will be honored.

Blessings chase the righteous.

If you refuse to discipline your children, it proves you don’t love them.

If you love your children, you will be prompt to discipline them.

The words of the wise keep them out of trouble.

An empty stable stays clean, but no income comes from an empty stable.

Knowledge comes easily to those with understanding.

There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death.

Laughter can conceal a heavy heart; when laughter ends, the grief remains.

Only simpletons believe everything they are told!

The wise person is crowned with knowledge.

Blessed are those who help the poor.

Work brings profit, but mere talk leads to poverty.

Those who fear the Lord are secure; he will be a place of refuge for their children.

The Lord is a life-giving fountain.

A relaxed attitude lengthens life; jealousy rots it away.

Those who oppress the poor insult their Maker, but those who help the poor honor him.

Godliness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

A gentle answer turns away wrath.

The wise person makes learning a joy.

Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

Whoever learns from correction is wise.

The Lord delights in the prayers of the upright.

A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.

A wise person is hungry for truth, while the fool feeds on trash.

Sensible children bring joy to their father.

Plans go wrong for lack of advice; many counselors bring success.

It is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time.

The Lord protects the property of widows.

The godly think before speaking.

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health.

If you reject criticism, you only harm yourself.

The Lord examines the motives.

The Lord despises pride.

When the ways of people please the Lord, he makes even their enemies live at peace with them.

The Lord demands fairness in every business deal.

Pride goes before destruction.

Those who trust the Lord will be happy.

Kind words are like honey---sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

Gossip separates the best of friends.

It is better to have self-control than to conquer a city.

We may throw the dice, but the Lord determines how they fall.

Those who mock the poor insult their maker.

Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged.

Disregarding another person’s faults preserves love.

If you repay evil for good, evil will never leave your house.

Anyone who loves to quarrel loves sin.

There is no joy for the father of a rebel.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength.

Even fools are thought to be wise when they keep silent.

A person’s words can be life-giving water; words of true wisdom are as refreshing as a bubbling brook.

A lazy person is as bad as someone who destroys things.

The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear it is the spirit is crushed?

Intelligent people are always open to new ideas. In fact, they look for them.

Giving a gift works wonders; it may bring you before important people.

It’s harder to make amends with an offended friend than to capture a fortified city.

People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the Lord.

To acquire wisdom is to love oneself; people who cherish understanding will prosper.

People with good sense restrain their anger; they earn esteem by overlooking wrongs.

A nagging wife annoys like a constant dripping.

If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord---and he will repay you.

Discipline your children while there is hope. If you don’t, you will ruin their lives.

You can make plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.

The fear of the Lord gives life, security, and protection from harm.

Whoever is led astray by drink cannot be wise.

Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor.

Good advice lies deep within a person’s heart, the wise will draw it out.

Even children are known by the way they act.

Wise speech is rarer and more valuable than gold and rubies.

A gossip tells secrets, so don’t hang around with someone who talks too much.

An inheritance obtained early in life is not a blessing in the end.

It is the Lord who directs our steps.

It is better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a contentious wife in a lovely home.

It is better to live alone in the desert than with a crabby, complaining wife.

Those who shut their ears to the cries of the poor will be ignored in their own time of need.

If you keep your mouth shut, you will stay out of trouble.

Human plans, no matter how wise or well advised, cannot stand against the Lord.

The horses are prepared for battle, but the victory belongs to the Lord.

Being held in high esteem is better than having silver or gold.

Teach your children to choose the right path, and when they are older, they will remain upon it.

Blessed are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.

A youngster’s heart is filled with foolishness, but discipline will drive it away.

Keep God’s words deep within yourself, always ready on your lips.

Don’t weary yourself trying to get rich.

Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice.

Don’t fail to correct your children. They won’t die if you spank them. Physical discipline may well save them from death.

You have a future ahead of you; your hope will not be disappointed.

Keep your heart on the right course.

Get the truth and don’t ever sell it.

The father of godly children has cause for joy.

O, my son, give me your heart.

In the end strong drink bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like a viper.

If you fail under pressure, your strength is not very great.

Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to death; don’t stand back and let them die.

Don’t try to avoid responsibility by saying you didn’t know about it. For God knows all hearts, and he sees you. He keeps watch over your soul, and he knows you knew!

The godly may trip seven times, but each time they will rise again. But only one calamity is enough to lay the wicked low.

It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them.

It is better to wait for an invitation than to be sent to the end of the line, publicly disgraced.

Timely advice is as lovely as golden apples in a silver basket.

Valid criticism is as treasured by the one who heeds it as jewelry made from the finest god.

Soft speech can crush strong opposition.

Don’t visit your neighbors too often, or you will wear out your welcome.

Singing cheerful songs to a person whose heart is heavy is as bad as stealing someone’s jacket in cold weather or rubbing salt in a wound.

If your enemies re hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink. You will heap burning coals on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.

A gossiping tongue causes anger!

An unfair curse will not land on its intended victim.

When arguing with fools, don’t answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are.

Honoring a fool is as foolish as tying a stone to a slingshot.

As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise.

The lazy person is full of excuses, saying, “I can’t go outside because there might be a lion on the road! Yes, I’m sure there’s a lion out there!”

Quarrels disappear when gossip stops.

Don’t brag about tomorrow, since you don’t know what the day will bring.

Anger is cruel, and wrath is like a flood, but who can survive the destructiveness of jealousy.

An open rebuke is better than hidden love.

Wounds from a friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.

Never abandon a friend.

If you shout a pleasant greeting to your neighbor too early in the morning, it will be counted as a curse!

As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend.

As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the person.

Just as Death and Destruction are never satisfied, so human desire is never satisfied.

Being praised tests a person.

The wicked run away when no one is chasing them.

When there is moral rot within a nation, its government topples easily.

Those who seek out worthless companions bring shame to their parents.

A person who makes money by charging interest will lose it. It will end up in the hands of someone who is kind to the poor.

People who cover over their sins will not prosper. But if they confess and forsake them, they will receive mercy.

Blessed are those who have a tender conscience.

A murderer’s tormented conscience will drive him into the grave.

The person who wants to get rich quick will only get into trouble.

A greedy person tries to get rich quick.

In the end people appreciate frankness more than flattery.

Trusting the Lord leads to prosperity.

Whoever gives to the poor will lack nothing. But a curse will come upon those who close their eyes to poverty.

Evil people are trapped by sin, but the righteous escape, shouting for joy.

Those who are wise will calm anger.

A fool gives full vent to anger, but a wise person quietly holds it back.

To discipline and reprimand a child produces wisdom, but an undisciplined child disgraces a mother.

Discipline your children, and they will give you happiness and peace of mind.

Whoever obeys the law is happy.

There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking.

A servant who is pampered from childhood will later become a rebel.

Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but to trust the Lord means safety.

The godly despise the wicked; the wicked despise the godly.

Who but God goes up to heaven and comes back down?

Who holds the wind in his fists?

Who wraps up the oceans in his cloak?

Who has created the whole wide world?

What is his name---and his son’s name?

Tell me if you know!

Every word of God proves true.

Anger causes quarrels.

Liquor is for the dying, and wine for those in deep depression.

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife? She is worth more than precious rubies.

He husband can trust her, and she will greatly enrich his life.

She will not hinder him but help him all her life.

A woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
